Old Friends And New Fancies

What if Elizabeth Bennet met Emma Woodhouse? What if Mr. Knightley encountered Captain Wentworth at a country ball? Sybil G. Brinton's 1912 novel asks these delicious questions and answers them with wit, romance, and startling assurance. This is the firstever sequel to Jane Austen's complete oeuvre, weaving characters from all six major novels into a single, sprawling story of love, marriage, and social maneuvering across Regency England. The novel follows multiple couples as they navigate the treacherous waters of courtship and engagement. Old attachments are tested, new attractions spark, and Austen's beloved characters discover that happiness still requires struggle. The daughters of Bennet, the wards of Dashwood, the neighbors of Knightley all find themselves entangled in a web of romantic complications that would surely have made their creator smile. What elevates Brinton's pastiche beyond mere imitation is her deep understanding of Austen's tone - the sharp observations masked in polite conversation, the way feelings reveal themselves through behavior rather than declaration. For anyone who has ever wondered what would happen if Austen's worlds collided, this novel offers a wonderfully satisfying answer.
