Novelle per un Anno, vol. 11: La Giara
This volume contains some of Pirandello's most psychologically destabilizing work. The title story, "La Giara," follows a man who purchases an ancient jar to store wine, only to find himself haunted by the trapped spirit of a woman who died within its walls. What begins as a tale of supernatural possession becomes something far more unsettling: a meditation on how we imprison ourselves through obsession, how the past bleeds into the present, and how the line between the living and the dead dissolves when grief and desire are strong enough. Other stories in this collection explore the fractures of identity, the masks we wear, and the terrifying moment when illusion collapses into an unbearable reality. Pirandello's Italy, here, is not the romantic landscape of tourism but a place of psychological extremity where ordinary people are shattered by forces they cannot name or escape. These are stories that unmake you, then leave you changed.
