Nothing but the Truth

A young man accepts a wager from his friends: speak nothing but the truth for three weeks. It sounds simple enough until you consider that Bob Bennett has just learned his father has lost the family fortune, that Society runs on carefully maintained fictions, and that he happens to be in love with a young woman who has never seen him as anything but the charming rogue he no longer is. The premise crackles with comic potential: how long can anyone survive in polite company bound to absolute honesty? When a society lady asks how you like her new hat, when your old friends expect you to cover for their own small deceits, when the woman you adore asks what you really think of her - the truth becomes either a weapon or a disaster. Isham writes with the brisk assurance of a man who understands that every social gathering is a kind of theater, and what happens when one actor suddenly refuses to follow the script.
