Niederländische Volkslieder

A collection of folk songs compiled and commented upon during the mid-19th century. The work explores the secular song tradition of the Netherlands, particularly focusing on the developments from the 15th century through subsequent cultural shifts that affected folk poetry and music. A significant theme is the evolution of Dutch folk songs in relation to other song traditions, notably German, reflecting changing societal norms and artistic expressions. The opening of the work presents a historical overview of Dutch secular song in the context of its similarities to German songs during the 15th century. It discusses how the styles diverged over time, particularly after the mid-16th century, leading to a transformation in folk poetry due to influences from more learned poets and a shift towards artful poetry. This section elaborates on various genres, such as ''Zamenspraken'' (dialogue songs) and ''Gassenhauer'' (popular street songs), outlining their thematic focus and cultural significance. The text serves as an introduction to the broader themes of vernacular creativity, societal values, and the vanishing authenticity of folk songs in contemporary settings.
