Niece Catherine

Catherine Carmichael has built a modest life in England as companion to the kind Mrs. Arderne, caring for her children with warmth and gratitude. But memories of her uncles in Australia haunt her: Uncle Ross and Uncle Jack, once close, now estranged over a family dispute involving their adopted nephew, Loring. When Catherine's hopes of visiting them seem impossible, she faces a painful reality, her financial situation is precarious, her fiancé Brian North struggles, and the uncles' rift shows no signs of healing. What follows is Catherine's earnest attempt to serve both her family and her faith, navigating moral dilemmas with sincerity rather than certainty. This is quiet Victorian fiction at its best: a story not of dramatic events but of inner transformation, where one young woman's stubborn belief in reconciliation becomes a test of both love and principle. Hampden writes with genuine compassion for the small struggles that consume ordinary lives, and Catherine emerges as a heroine whose greatest courage lies in refusing to abandon hope.
