Nice Girl with 5 Husbands

1951 was a different era, but Fritz Leiber's novella still feels startling. Tom Dorset, an artist struggling with his work, retreats to a desert fellowship only to encounter Lois Wolver and her five husbands, a woman who treats marriage not as exclusive property but as something to be shared. Leiber isn't writing satire or utopia; he's writing anthropology. The Wolvers aren't a cult or a fantasy escape, they're a genuine experiment in what love becomes when you strip away ownership. Tom's bewilderment is our entry point, and his questions about creativity, commitment, and belonging cut deeper than any easy answers. The prose has Leiber's signature wit and psychological precision. This is speculative fiction doing what it does best: using the future to interrogate the present's most cherished assumptions about intimacy. For readers who want their science fiction to philosophically provoke.
