Narcissus

Evelyn Scott's Narcissus fractures the romantic triangle into something far more unsettling: a woman questioning whether she desires others or merely the image they reflect back to her. Julia prepares to meet her lover Dudley while her husband Laurence remains elsewhere, and in this waiting lies the novel's electric tension. She knows her own beauty, exploits it, yet cannot escape the suspicion that her passion for Dudley is really passion for herself seen through his eyes. Their encounters oscillate between tenderness and cruelty, each meeting revealing how intimacy can become a mirror rather than a connection. Scott writes in fragments and shifting perspectives that mirror Julia's unstable sense of self, making the reader feel her desperate need to be seen and her terror of being truly known. The novel asks an uncomfortable question: can love ever be generous, or is it always at its core an act of narcissism? This 1922 modernist experiment anticipates later feminist explorations of how female identity gets constructed through male gaze, and how romantic entanglement can dissolve the self as easily as it defines it.
