My Shipmate—columbus
What if the real reason Columbus sailed wasn't stubborn genius, but a nudge from the future? That's the audacious premise of this forgotten 1960s time-travel gem. Danny Jones, a college sophomore with a skeptical edge, inherits a mysterious trunk from his eccentric grand-uncle, a trunk allegedly powered by faith and imagination. When curiosity gets the better of him, Danny wakes up in 1492, inhabiting the body of Martin Pinzon, the mariner who captained one of Columbus's three ships. Suddenly, the young man from the twentieth century is standing on the deck of the Pinta, watching a drunken Columbus waver dangerously close to turning back. The stakes are absurdly high: if Columbus doesn't sail, history changes. If Danny fails to convince him, he may never get home. Marlowe plays the premise with straight-faced adventure, letting the absurdity speak for itself. It's a charming alternative history, one that asks whether faith can literally move mountains, and oceans.
