Mrs. Dorriman: A Novel. Volume 2 of 3

A three-volume romance written in the late 19th century. The story revolves around Margaret Rivers, a young woman who finds herself in a complex web of love and obligation, particularly concerning her sister Grace. As Margaret navigates her feelings for Sir Albert Gerald and the burdens of familial duty, the novel explores themes of sacrifice, societal expectations, and the search for true happiness. The opening of this volume presents a rich tableau of socio-dramatic interactions, highlighting the relationships between characters that drive the plot. Sir Albert, recovering from an accident, is introduced alongside the accommodating but perplexed Mr. and Mrs. Macrae, who become entangled in the affairs of the more genteel characters. The narrative quickly delves into societal norms, particularly how Margaret’s selflessness is contrasted with her sister’s selfishness, as Margaret grapples with the necessity of marrying Mr. Drayton to ensure Grace's security. Tensions rise as misunderstandings and unreciprocated affections shape the lives of the main characters, setting the stage for conflict and future developments in their intertwined fates.
