Mrs. Darrell

Washington in the early 1900s, when the city was still a raw capital of diplomats and army officers, not yet bloated with new money and grand mansions. Into this world come two young British captains, Darrell and Pelham, navigating the peculiar social chessboard of American high society where senators are formidable figures and young ladies still ride the tram in muslin gowns with their white slippers bundled in party-bags. They encounter Elizabeth Brandon, daughter of a former Confederate general, whose beauty and composed grace mask a deeper struggle: finding her place in a society that demands she choose between the old Southern world her father represents and the new Anglo-American future the officers embody. The charity ball where they meet crackles with romantic tension and cultural misunderstanding, setting in motion relationships that will test not only hearts but assumptions about class, loyalty, and what it means to belong. Davis writes with sharp observation about the rituals of courtship, the unspoken hierarchies of Washington society, and the particular loneliness of those caught between worlds.
