Mr. Punch on Tour: The Humour of Travel at Home and Abroad

Mr. Punch, the hooked-nosed, bowler-hatted puppet who defined British comedy for a century, serves as your sardonic tour guide through the glorious absurdities of late-Victorian travel. This collection gathers the finest sketches and vignettes from the legendary Punch magazine, roasting the English tourist with the kind of affectionate cruelty that never ages. Whether Mrs. Ramsbotham is struggling to communicate with foreign hoteliers, or British travelers are being thoroughly routed by continental customs, the comedy emerges from a universal truth: humans have always been spectacularly hopeless at behaving themselves abroad. The humor operates on two levels. On the surface, it's a period piece, a charming window into gaslit railway stations and steamer trunks. But scratch that surface, and you'll find the exact same Species of Fool who clogs airports today, who mispronounces foreign words with confidence, who returns home having learned nothing but a sunburn. Punch understood that travel reveals character, and that most character revealed is hilarious.
