Mistress Spitfire: A Plain Account of Certain Episodes in the History of Richard Coope, Gent., and of His Cousin, Mistress Alison French, at the Time of the Revolution, 1642-1644

England burns with civil war, and at East Hardwick Manor, a young man's conscience burns hotter than any battlefield. Richard Coope stands at the precarious edge of his own life: his uncle Sir Nicholas, gout-ridden and imperious, demands he abandon his beloved books for the law and loyal service to the King. But the drums of revolution are echoing across the land, and Richard's quiet scholarly dreams begin to crack beneath the weight of ideology, loyalty, and the startling pull of his own convictions. When his cousin Alison French arrives, her fiery spirit and unspoken tensions with Richard expose the fractures beneath the family's polished surface. The rain lashes the manor like the fates themselves, and Richard must choose: the safe path of duty, or the treacherous terrain of principle. Mistress Spitfire captures the English Civil War not through battles but through the intimate, devastating question of who we become when everything that defined us dissolves into smoke and argument.
