Middlemarch (version 2)

Middlemarch (version 2)

George Eliot

George Eliot's masterpiece anatomizes a provincial English town with the precision of a surgeon and the compassion of a prophet. Set in Middlemarch during the early 1830s, it follows several interlocking lives: Dorothea Brooke, whose desperate idealism leads her to a suffocating marriage with the pedantic scholar Casaubon; Tertius Lydgate, the young physician whose ambitions for hospital reform collide with petty local resistance; and Fred Vincy, whose romantic carelessnness drags the practical Mary Garth into his orbit. Eliot peoples her fictional Midlands with such vivid particularity that Middlemarch feels less like a novel than a living town one has somehow forgotten. The book explores what happens when grand intentions meet the friction of ordinary life, when reformers discover their projects hijacked by self-interest, and when women discover that the world offers them only narrow cages disguised as choices. Its famous subtitle, 'A Study of Provincial Life,' undersells its radical project: this is an inquiry into how society forms and deforms the self.
