Mattie:—a Stray (vol 3 of 3)

In Victorian England's shadowed corners, a young woman named Mattie, unguided, untethered, a virtual stray in society's eyes, finds herself bound by a dying man's final wish. Sidney Hinchford has lost his father, his sight, and his will to live. Blindness has plunged him into a darkness that feels deserved, a man who once burned bright now reduced to grief and self-pity. Mattie carries her own burdens: loyalty to a promise made to a man now gone, feelings she cannot speak, a father who would see her make different choices. Society watches, judgmental and indifferent by turns. What begins as duty becomes something more complicated, a test of whether love can rebuild a man who has already surrendered, and whether a woman with nothing can save someone who has everything yet nothing left to see. This is a novel about the invisible labor of care, the cost of keeping promises, and the question of whether we owe anything to people who cannot repay us.
