Marge Askinforit

Marge Askinforit is a comic masterpiece of misdirection, narrated by a woman whose very name (Margarine) announces that nothing in this book will be taken at face value. Writing her autobiography, Marge fixates not on her own life but on the memoirs of a famous predecessor, dissecting the Great Example's contradictions, factual errors, and maddening vagueness with the intensity of a detective solving a murder. What emerges is a sharp parody of Edwardian self-aggrandizement in print, where the narrator's prim obsessions and ironic self-regard become the real subject. Around this central game spins Marge's chaotic household: siblings whose life choices defy explanation, family dynamics played for absurdist comedy, and a world where everyone's peculiarities are presented as utterly ordinary. Barry Pain constructs something rare: a novel that's simultaneously a loving send-up and a pointed critique of the era's obsession with self-documentation. The comedy operates on multiple levels, from broad family farce to subtle literary allusion, making it as rewarding on the fifth reading as the first.
