Margaret Capel: A Novel, Vol. 3 of 3

After years of grief and quiet seclusion, Margaret Capel is finally learning to live again. Haunted by memories of Mr. Haveloc and worn down by sorrow, she has found fragile peace in the companionship of Mrs. Fitzpatrick, her health returning amid serene English countryside. But when her vivacious friend Harriet Conway extends an invitation to the glittering world of balls and social assemblies, Margaret's carefully constructed solitude begins to crumble. She is thrust back into a realm of romantic entanglements, where the indecisive George Gage troubles her peace, and a presumptuous young admirer tests her patience. Harriet's own fiery escapades at these gatherings serve as a stark contrast to Margaret's guarded heart. As the third volume unfolds, Margaret must decide whether to remain a passive observer of life's passions or to risk her guarded heart once more. Wallace renders a woman's gradual emergence from mourning with psychological subtlety, capturing the tension between societal expectation and private longing.
