Madge Morton's Victory

This 1914 girls' adventure novel captures a moment when four friends stand on the threshold of everything. Madge Morton has just graduated as valedictorian of Miss Tolliver's Select School for Girls, an honor shadowed by complicated feelings about fairness and her best friend Phyllis, who arguably deserved it more. The ceremony brings stage fright, tearful reconciliations, and the bittersweet weight of leaving childhood behind. But summer arrives with transformation: the girls acquire an old canal boat and refashion it into The Merry Maid, a floating home launched on Chesapeake Bay. Here, beneath open skies, they discover what they're capable of beyond school walls: courage, independence, and the unbreakable ties that tighten when tested. Chalmers writes with genuine tenderness about the particular intensity of girlhood friendships: the fierce loyalty, the small betrayals, the desperate need to be seen and chosen. For modern readers, this offers a window into early 20th century adolescence while capturing something timeless about growing up and the friends who make the journey bearable.
