The Machine Stops is a science fiction short story by E. M. Forster, first published in The Oxford and Cambridge Review in November 1909 and later included in The Eternal Moment and Other Stories in 1928. The narrative explores a dystopian future where humanity lives underground in isolation, relying entirely on a global Machine for their needs. Notable for its prescient themes of technology and isolation, it was recognized as one of the best novellas up to 1965 and featured in the anthology Modern Short Stories.
