Lummox

Lummox, published in 1923 by Fannie Hurst, is a domestic fiction novel that follows Bertha, a working-class domestic servant in New York. The story delves into her struggles with class, exploitation, and the societal indifference she faces as an unmarried mother. Hurst's portrayal of Bertha's lyrical inner life contrasts sharply with her harsh external circumstances, highlighting the themes of labor and longing. The novel reflects early 20th-century social issues, particularly regarding women's rights and social class disparities in the United States.
