London Town

A young girl wanders Victorian London in verse, encountering Tower guards, street vendors, and famous landmarks. The real magic lives in the small details: the muffin man, the Shoeblack brigade polishing shoes, the Orange Girl with her cart. Some sights still stand (Westminster, the Tower, Cleopatra's Needle), while others have vanished entirely (the cries of street vendors, forgotten professions, a London before the motor car). The illustrations by Thomas Crane and Ellen Houghton are meticulous Victorian renderings that make this a visual time capsule. It captures a city that no longer exists, seen through the eyes of a child discovering its wonders. Whether you're planning a London trip with little ones or simply want to share the charm of a vanished world, this book makes an ideal read-aloud. The verse is simple enough for young readers, the details rich enough to reward adults.
