Little Citizens: The Humours of School Life

A collection of vignettes capturing the chaotic, endearing world of a Lower East Side classroom in 1904, where immigrant children navigate friendship, rivalry, and the small dramas of childhood under the watchful eye of a young teacher. Myra Kelly renders the texture of these children's lives with humor and tenderness: the feuding cousins, the whispered conspiracies, the fierce loyalties and petty betrayals that matter so enormously when you're young. Constance Bailey, the earnest new teacher, struggles to bring order to the mayhem while slowly discovering that her students might understand more than she anticipated. The book functions as a warm time capsule, preserving the sounds, rhythms, and particular ways children made meaning in an immigrant community navigating the complexities of American identity at the turn of the century. What emerges is neither sentimental nor patronizing, but something rarer: a portrait of childhood that takes its subjects seriously, even when they're fighting over who gets to sit by the window.
