Literary Hearthstones of Dixie

At once an act of literary archaeology and a love letter to the American South, this 1912 collection essays the lives and works of the region's most celebrated writers through the landscapes that shaped them. La Salle Corbell Pickett, herself a Southern writer, anchors each figure to the physical and emotional environments of their creation, Poe's Richmond, the fading plantation homes, the war-haunted memories of a civilization still defining itself. The prose moves with the deliberate cadence of an earlier age, tender and occasionally florid, less concerned with critical analysis than with revealing how place becomes inseparable from creativity in the Southern imagination. This is regional literary criticism as nostalgia, written when the old South existed still within living memory. For readers exploring the roots of Southern literature or seeking a vanished perspective on America's literary past, it offers an intimate window into a regional tradition that continues to echo through American culture.
