Legend of Moulin Huet

In the year 165-, when Cromwell's shadow fell heavy over the Channel Islands, a bitter miller named Pierre Moullin broods in his stone house above the bay of Moulin Huet. Unlike his neighbors, a rough but decent lot who trade gossip at the mill and help one another in a pinch, Pierre is a man sealed in his own resentment, hard with the poor, harder still with his only daughter Marguerite, who has dared to love a Royalist soldier named Charlie Heyward. Lizzie A. Freeth, writing from intimate knowledge of Guernsey's cliffs and tides, constructs Pierre's jealousy with the slow, grinding patience of her protagonist's occupation: this is no sudden rage but a calcifying malice that sees its chance in the form of Jacques Gaultier, a local man equally spurned by Marguerite. The mill wheel becomes an instrument of murder, and what follows is a cascade of tragedy that proves how thoroughly love and cruelty can entangle. The historical setting matters, these were years when the islands balanced between allegiance and survival, but Freeth's real achievement is psychological: a portrait of resentment passed down like an inheritance, and the wreckage it leaves behind.
