Last of the Mohicans - A Narrative of 1757 (version 2)

James Fenimore Cooper

The year is 1757. War between France and Britain burns through the forests of New York, and on the frontier where empires collide, three men walk alone: Hawkeye, the white woodsman who speaks forest better than English; Chingachgook, last chief of the Mohicans; and Uncas, the last of his bloodline. When British sisters Cora and Alice Munro are captured during the massacre at Fort William Henry, these three unlikely allies pursue their captors through wilderness that is both sublime and savage. What follows is a chase through the mountains that tests loyalty, love, and the boundaries between civilization and the wild. Cooper wrote this novel in 1826, nearly seventy years after the events it describes, and the elegy in his prose is unmistakable. The Mohicans are already gone by the time he writes, their extinction a fait accompli. This is not merely an adventure story but a mournful meditation on the peoples consumed by America's founding, on the violence that built a nation, and on what was lost when the forests fell.
