Lake Country Sketches

In the years just after Wordsworth's death, a generation of Lake District villagers still remembered the poet and his circle. H. D. Rawnsley captured their testimonies before they faded entirely, gathering the voices of housemaids, shepherds, and shopkeepers who had known these figures firsthand. What emerges is not literary criticism but something rarer: the living memory of a world that shaped English poetry, preserved in the words of those who inhabited it. Rawnsley moves between intimate portraits and vivid descriptions of the fells, lakes, and villages, sketching a landscape where poetry and ordinary life still tangled together. The book carries the particular sadness of witnessing a vanishing world. These are the last witnesses to a moment when Wordsworth's hills were still worked by the people who had seen him walking among them.
