Klein Zaches, genannt Zinnober

A grotesque satirical fairy tale about the thin membrane between merit and perception. The changeling Klein Zaches is so ugly and dim that even his fairy godmother Rosabelverde despairs, yet she grants him a cruel gift: all his mediocrity shall pass for brilliance, all his thefts for achievements, while genuine talent goes unrecognized and is punished in his place. Sent to the university town of Kerepes, he reinvents himself as 'Zinnober' and rises rapidly to power, loved and admired by all except one perceptive poet. Balthasar alone sees through the enchantment, but his beloved Candida succumbs to the spell like everyone else, and even the enlightened Prince Paphnutius cannot discern truth from illusion. Hoffmann's savage portrait of a world that rewards charlatanry while crushing authentic genius remains piercingly relevant: a dark fairy tale about credit, recognition, and the comfortable blindness of those in power.
