In Pawn

The setup reads like a joke no one would dare to make: a lazy junk dealer in nowhere America decides his purpose in life is to become a saint, and when a debt comes due, he puts his own son up as collateral. That's the entire fractured heart of Ellis Parker Butler's 1921 novel - a pitch-black comedy about a man so spectacularly devoted to avoiding responsibility that he treats his child like furniture to be pawned. But the book earns its strange sadness. Lemuel is a diligent boy forced to raise himself while his father meditates about holiness and refuses to work. The dead mother haunts the story through her portrait on the wall - Lem resembles her uncannily, which only sharpens the tragedy of his abandonment. When Lem gets caught up in petty theft with local children, the resulting family crisis cracks open just how broken these people are. Butler skewers small-town American hypocrisy and religious self-delusion with sharp precision, but what lingers is the boy's quiet resilience. It's uncomfortable, it's funny, and it aches.
