Imperialism and World Politics, Part 3 of 4

Imperialism and World Politics, Part 3 of 4

Parker Thomas Moon

Written in 1926, as the sun began to set on the age of empire, this book represents a remarkable historical document: a rigorous academic survey of imperialism composed while the enterprise itself was still unfolding, yet suffused with the peculiar melancholy of an era that had just witnessed its own civilization tear itself apart. Parker Thomas Moon, a Columbia University political scientist, set out to fill a conspicuous gap in the literature, a comprehensive, accessible account of how the great powers (Britain, France, Belgium, Italy, Russia, Germany, Japan, and the United States) had divided and redrawn the globe to serve their own ambitions. He examines the machinery of imperial control: economic extraction, political subjugation, military intervention, and the fragile justifications erected to defend them. Though Moon modestly claimed his work could make no claim to finality, it remained in print for over a decade and offers modern readers an invaluable window into how empires functioned and rationalized their dominance at the height of the system.
