Her Lord and Master

Horatio Stillwater, a self-made man from Indiana, checks into a New York hotel in 1902, eager to reunite with his family after their winter vacation. But his daughter Indiana has ideas of her own. Spirited, sharp-tongued, and unwilling to simply inherit her father's expectations, she represents everything the old order resists: modern ambition, female assertiveness, a refusal to be ornamental. Stillwater loves her deeply, yet he struggles to understand a world shifting beneath his feet. Comic tension emerges when he encounters Lord Canning, an English gentleman whose polished manners and easy authority highlight Stillwater's own anxious pride. A doctor suggests sailing for Stillwater's health, hinting at journeys both literal and metaphorical. This is a story about what families inherit from each other: the weight of tradition, the hunger for something different, and the quiet war between protecting those we love and letting them breathe. It captures a moment when Victorian certainties were crumbling and Americans were inventing new ways to be wealthy, powerful, and free.
