American Literature, Biographies

This is not a biography written from a distance. F. B. Sanborn knew Henry David Thoreau personally, moved in his circles, and heard him speak at gatherings in Concord where Emerson and Hawthorne also wandered. Published in 1882, just two decades after Thoreau's death, this book preserves something no later academic treatment can: the living memory of a man still recent enough to remember. Sanborn draws on Thoreau's own letters, on conversations with his family and friends, on the texture of daily life in Concord rather than just the mythology that would eventually attach to Walden Pond. The result is an affectionate, informal portrait of a thinker whose quiet exterior concealed fierce convictions. Here is Thoreau the abolitionist who lectured against the Fugitive Slave Law, whose essay Civil Disobedience would quietly reshape political thought across the century, inspiring Gandhi, Tolstoy, and Martin Luther King Jr. Yet here too is Thoreau the neighbor, the son, the friend who walked these streets and watched these ponds. If you have always seen Thoreau as a distant figure in American letters, this book brings him back to human scale.
