British Literature, Romance

The year is the late 1500s. The place is Haddon Hall, ancestral seat of the Vernons, where stone corridors hold centuries of legend and the spring hawking parties bring the county's nobles to its doors. Dorothy Vernon is the hall's greatest treasure: beautiful, sharp-witted, and utterly unwilling to be traded like coin in her father's political games. She has caught the eye of Sir Henry de la Zouch, a man of ambition and iron patience who sees inheritance where others see only a woman. But Dorothy's heart belongs to John Manners, a young man of lesser standing whose steady devotion threatens every calculation her family has made. What follows is a dance of resisted pressures, whispered meetings, and the slow collapse of a world where a woman's voice was meant to be the last thing heard in her own house. This is historical romance as the Victorians wrote it: lush with atmosphere, rich with the particular frustrations of women caught between duty and desire, and building toward a resolution that still carries the weight of what it cost to choose one's own fate.
