Heart of Darkness (version 2)
Charles Marlow takes a commission that will cost him everything he thinks he knows about himself. Shipped to the Belgian Congo as a river-boat captain, he pushes deeper into the interior seeking a man named Kurtz, a trader of ivory whose reputation has grown monstrous in the jungle. What Marlow finds there will not release him: a landscape that devours hope, a system of brutal exploitation disguised as civilization, and finally Kurtz himself, his final words a judgment that echoes across the century. But the true horror is the one Marlow carries back, the knowledge that the darkness he witnessed is not some African abyss but the capacity for evil that lives in every human heart. This is not an adventure story. It is an account of what happens when you look into the void and find it looking back.
