Has a Frog a Soul?

Has a Frog a Soul?

Thomas Henry Huxley

Thomas Huxley takes on one of philosophy's most unsettling questions: what separates us from the creatures we cut open? This 1870 address to the Metaphysical Society transforms vivisection into a metaphysical weapon. By examining what happens when you slice into a living frog's brain, Huxley asks whether these creatures possess anything we'd call a soul, or whether they're merely sophisticated machinery responding to stimuli like clockwork. The argument is characteristically brutal in its logic: if a frog's nervous system shows no evidence of consciousness beyond reflex, what grounds do we have for attributing souls to any animal? The implications radiate outward. If no soul exists in the frog, where does it enter the human lineage? Huxley doesn't flinch from the materialist conclusion, and it shook his Victorian audience. More than a century later, the question still provokes. It's essential reading for anyone interested in consciousness, animal minds, or the philosophical foundations of modern biology.
