Greyfriars Bobby

The most loyal dog in history, rendered in prose that manages to be both gentle and devastating. Set in the fog-shrouded streets of 1850s Edinburgh, this is the story of Bobby, a small Skye Terrier whose shepherd master dies in poverty, and the dog's impossible decision: to leave with strangers offering comfort, or to stay. He stays. For fourteen years, Bobby keeps watch at the grave of Auld Jock in Greyfriars Kirkyard, surviving on scraps tossed by sympathetic locals and the coalmen who pass through the city's wynds and closes. Eleanor Atkinson's novel takes what could be a simple children's morality tale and deepens it into something more complex: a portrait of Edinburgh's rough kindnesses, its class divisions, and the way a city came to believe in one small animal's grief. The story endures because it asks us to consider what loyalty means when there is no reward, no understanding, no end in sight. For readers who believe that love outlasts the beloved.
