God's Playthings

June 1685. James Scott, Duke of Monmouth, has been captured after his desperate rebellion against King James II failed at Sedgemoor. Now he waits in a Tower cell, writing letters to men of power, pleading for intercession with a king who has every reason to show him none. The man who briefly believed himself the rightful heir to England's crown now faces the Tyburn tree, and the only weapon left to him is words. Marjorie Bowen, a pseudonym for the prolific historical fiction writer Gabrielle Long, traces Monmouth's final days with psychological acuity and atmospheric weight. We see a man torn between remnants of royalist dignity and the grinding terror of a condemned prisoner who cannot quite accept his fate. The novel moves through the charged spaces of Whitehall and the Tower, rendering the political intrigue and shifting loyalties of the Restoration court with sharp period detail. What emerges is not simple heroism or villainy, but a tragic figure undone by his own aspirations and the merciless arithmetic of failed rebellion. For readers who savor the psychological depths of historical tragedy, who appreciate the doomed elegance of figures like Guy Fawkes or Charles I, this is a compact, affecting portrait of ambition's ultimate price.
