Goat Alley: A Tragedy of Negro Life

This brutal, necessary play exposes the impossible choices facing Black women in early 20th century America. Lucy Belle Dorsey shares a crumbling room in Goat Alley with her aunt, scraping by in a Washington D.C. slum while trying to build a future with her partner Sam. But the past won't stay buried: Jeff Bisbee, the man who brutalized her, has resurfaced, threatening everything she's pieced together. Culbertson's spare, unflinching drama shows a woman caught between survival and self-preservation, between the man who destroyed her and the one who might save her. The play refuses to look away from poverty, infidelity, and the crushing weight of systemic oppression, yet it also captures the fierce, quiet dignity of people who refuse to be broken. Nearly a century old, Goat Alley remains vital not because of its historical value alone, but because it asks questions we still haven't answered: what do we owe those we've hurt, and what do we owe ourselves when the world has taken everything?
