Gaut Gurley; Or, the Trappers of Umbagog: A Tale of Border Life

A dark tale of moral corruption set in the wild border country of New England, where a troubled merchant hosts a lavish gathering to mask his crumbling finances, only to encounter a figure whose very presence radiates danger. Gaut Gurley arrives uninvited to the party, and with him comes the irresistible lure of high-stakes gambling. What begins as a desperate attempt to preserve reputation becomes a descent into vice that threatens to destroy everything Mark Elwood holds dear. Daniel P. Thompson, once New England's most celebrated novelist before Hawthorne claimed that throne, weaves a story about the fragility of reputation, the seduction of vice, and the dire consequences of chasing wealth beyond one's means. The remote wilderness of Umbagog, where trappers and frontier folk eke out rugged lives, provides the perfect stage for this drama of moral decay. Gurley is no ordinary villain; he is a figure of shadow and charm, a man who seems to know precisely which strings to pull to undo those around him. This is frontier noir before the genre had a name, a story about how easily a man can lose himself when ambition collides with weakness.
