From Plotzk to Boston

In 1894, a thirteen-year-old Jewish girl named Mary Antin slipped away from her hometown of Polotsk in the Russian Empire, leaving behind everything she had ever known. This is her account of that illegal flight: the bribes paid to border guards, the terrifying weeks in a German quarantine station, the crowding and chaos of Hamburg's emigration halls, and finally the ship that carried her family toward an uncertain future in America. Written with a child's startling clarity and an immigrant's fierce gratitude, Antin's memoir captures the texture of displacement in vivid detail: the weight of her mother's anxiety, the strange foods, the incomprehensible languages, the constant fear of being caught and sent back. Yet what emerges is not merely a story of suffering but of transformation. When the family finally descends the stairs into the Boston slums, Antin writes with breathless wonder about the可能性 that opens before her. This slim, unpretentious book laid the foundation for her later masterpiece, The Promised Land, but it possesses something that its famous successor lacks: the raw, unfiltered gaze of a child encountering the world anew. For anyone who wants to understand what immigration actually felt like, from the inside, in the flesh, this is an essential document.
