Fourteenth Century Verse & Prose

Before Chaucer polished English into something recognizable, there was this: raw, muscular Middle English verse and prose from a century of turbulence and transformation. This anthology captures the literary landscape just before English literature found its greatest voice, gathering poems and tales that shaped avernacular tradition. Here you'll find Robert Mannyng's 'Handlyng Synne,' with its earthy moral instructures, and 'The Dancers of Colbek,' a chilling tale of revelers who ignore a priest's warning and face supernatural reckoning. These texts sit at the crossroads of Latin learning, French courtly culture, and an emerging English identity. They entertained, they instructed, they frightened. They show us English becoming itself, not yet canonical but vibrantly alive. For readers curious about where literature begins, or anyone who wants to hear the language as it sounded when it first began to sing in the ears of ordinary people.
