Four Girls at Chautauqua

Four Girls at Chautauqua, written by Pansy (Isabella Alden) and first published in 1876, follows the journey of four young women—Ruth, Eurie, Flossy, and Marion—who attend the Chautauqua Assembly, a cultural and educational gathering. The novel explores themes of friendship, personal growth, and the tension between societal expectations and individual desires within the context of late 19th-century America. Each character brings a unique perspective, highlighting the contrast between religious sincerity and the pursuit of pleasure as they navigate their youthful aspirations amidst societal judgments.
