Fortune's My Foe: A Romance

Two narratives converge in this swashbuckling 18th-century romance: one of a captain facing death as his wife gives birth aboard a ship in the Caribbean during Admiral Vernon's siege of Cartagena; another of Richard Grange, an honorable gentleman whose life is shattered when he's falsely accused of a crime he didn't commit. Forced to flee as an outlaw, Richard's only anchor is Margaret Vane, a noblewoman who believes in his innocence despite the web of deceit closing around them. The title Fortune's My Foe proves prophetic: fate systematically dismantles Richard's world, stripping his reputation and futures alike. Yet love becomes his stubborn defiance against circumstance. Bloundelle-Burton weaves colonial warfare, naval drama, and forbidden romance into a narrative that asks whether honor can survive when society has already pronounced its verdict. The prose carries the romantic earnestness of its era, with vivid Caribbean seas and the claustrophobic intrigue of English drawing rooms alike rendered in bold strokes. For readers who want their historical fiction with high stakes, beating hearts, and a hero worth rooting for.
