In the Day of Adversity

A winter storm becomes the least of his enemies. Georges St. Georges, a soldier bound by the king's command, carries his three-year-old daughter Dorine through frozen France toward Paris, a city that may offer salvation or conspiracy. His wife is dead. His mission is secret. And every door that opens might hide a blade. Bloundelle-Burton constructs his tale with the rhythm of a forced march: each step through the snow mirrors the tightening noose of political intrigue. In Dijon, refuge comes wrapped in aristocratic courtesy, yet the Marquis Phelypeaux's mansion may prove as treacherous as the blizzard outside. Every handshake trembles with double meaning. Every invitation carries the scent of a trap. What elevates this novel beyond period adventure is its ruthless examination of paternal love under duress. Georges is not merely a soldier executing orders, he is a father for whom survival and protection have become inseparable. The frozen wilderness becomes a mirror for his internal landscape: stark, unforgiving, beautiful in its cruelty. The author asks what happens when a man must outrun not just enemies, but his own capacity for trust. For readers who savor the psychological tension of noir wed to historical sweep, who want their period fiction to pose uncomfortable questions about civilization's thin veneer.
