Forrest House: A Novel
1879
In 1879, Mary Jane Holmes gave readers a sharp-eyed portrait of a young man trapped between desire and duty. J. Everard Forrest has secret ties to Rosamond Hastings, a woman of quiet virtue from his past, yet finds himself enchanted by Josephine Fleming, a beautiful flirt who represents everything exciting and dangerous. When letters arrive one morning, one calling him to the theater, one summoning him to his sick mother's bedside, Everard must navigate not just his obligations but the web of relationships that will determine his future. The novel unfolds through his internal conflict and the choices he makes, each decision carrying weight for everyone connected to him. Holmes writes with psychological precision about the tensions between social class, personal integrity, and the heart's complicated wants. This is Victorian domestic fiction at its most engaging: a story about what we owe to others versus what we owe to ourselves, and the impossible positions love can put us in.
