Footsteps of Fate, published in 1899, is a novel by Dutch author Louis Couperus that explores the complex friendship between two young men, Frank and Bertie, in London. When Bertie, in need, moves in with Frank, he becomes entangled in a life of luxury and excess. The narrative intensifies as Frank falls in love with Eva, who struggles with Bertie's deep affection for Frank, leading to a conflict of emotions and the influence of fate on their lives. This work is notable for being Couperus's second novel and the first to be translated into English.
