Flower O' the Heather: A Story of the Killing Times

Scotland, 1680s. The Killing Times have begun, and the Covenanters bleed for their faith in the hills and moors. Walter de Brydde was supposed to be a scholar, not a soldier. But a drunken confrontation with authority at Oxford ends his studies and sends him home to Scotland, where a soldier's uniform offers quick answers to a young man's uncertain future. What begins as a wayward wanderer's path toward enlistment becomes something far more complicated when Walter finds himself armed against men and women who would rather die than renounce their covenant with God. The historical machinery of royal oppression grinds forward, but this is not merely a tale of politics and persecution. It is a story about what happens when a reckless boy must choose between obeying orders and listening to his own conscience, and whether redemption exists for those who fight on the wrong side of righteousness.
