In 1926, a group of young Black artists refused to wait for permission. They created a magazine called Fire!!, a single, blazing issue that announced the arrival of a new generation of Negro writers and artists who would not bend to anyone's expectations. This collection gathers the first and only issue of that revolutionary quarterly: poems that ache with love and rage, essays that tear open the mask of American racism, plays that burst with Black humanity, and sketches that capture a community in the crucible of creation. Here are Langston Hughes's essential early poems, Zora Neale Hurston's ferocious voice already in full force, George S. Schuyler's unsparing portrait of Southern violence, and more.
