Fidelity: A Novel

Susan Glaspell

American Literature, Novels

In 1900s Iowa, Ruth Holland makes a choice that unmake her: she leaves her husband for another man's bed. When she returns to Freeport eleven years later, she finds her father dead, her sister unwilling to speak, and her name a thing the townspeople will not say aloud. Susan Glaspell's 1915 novel traces the precise architecture of exile, the letters Ruth writes but cannot send, the doors that close, the faces that turn away. But this is no simple morality tale. Glaspell renders Ruth's restlessness not as villainy but as something more dangerous: a woman's hunger for a life that the world around her has made impossible. The novel asks uncomfortable questions about what we owe to others versus what we owe to ourselves, and whether the community's right to judge is indistinguishable from its capacity for cruelty. Written when Glaspell was at the height of her powers as both novelist and playwright, Fidelity stands alongside The Awakening as an essential portrait of a woman who refuses to be small. It endures because Ruth's longing remains recognizable, because the novel refuses easy judgment, because it understands that some wounds deepen rather than heal with time.
