Feudal Tyrants; Or, The Counts of Carlsheim and Sargans, Volume 1 (of 4)

Benedikte Naubert was among the first German women to write historical fiction, and this epistolary novel from the early 1800s announces her radical project with quiet, devastating force. The story unfolds through letters: Elizabeth, the widowed Countess of Torrenburg, writes to the Abbot of Cloister-Curwald as she grapples with grief, guilt, and the crushing weight of her position. She is heiress to feudal lands, surrounded by those who would exploit her vulnerability, and haunted by a tragic love she cannot entirely abandon. Each letter peels back another layer of her inner life, revealing a woman caught between what society demands and what her heart remembers. The novel operates on two fronts: as a romance of manners steeped in the politics of aristocratic inheritance, and as a psychological portrait of a woman reclaiming her voice after loss. Naubert writes with striking modernity about grief that has no sanctioned place in a world expecting widows to perform rather than feel.
