Fearful Rock

The American Civil War rages, but on a remote Southern estate, another kind of battle is unfolding. Enid Mandifer has lived her life under the shadow of her adoptive father, the unsettling Persil Mandifer, never suspecting the secret he has kept: she was never his daughter, but a bride promised to something far older and more terrible than any man. The Nameless One waits at Fearful Rock, an ancient evil that demands a sacrifice, and Enid discovers her entire life has been a prelude to this dark appointment. When Union Lieutenant Kane Lanark arrives at the isolated mansion, drawn into this web of supernatural dread, Enid faces an impossible choice: submit to the Nameless One or risk everything on a stranger's help. Wellman weaves Civil War tension with Gothic horror, creating a story where personal identity becomes indistinguishable from cosmic evil. The result is a haunting meditation on fate, sacrifice, and what it means to belong to something beyond human understanding.
