English Songs and Ballads

These are the songs England sang before it learned to read. Drawn from oral tradition and printed sources now obscure, this anthology preserves the raw music of the common voice: love songs that ache with longing, ballads of betrayal and blood, tales of sailors lost at sea and lovers parted by death. Some pieces bear the names of known poets; many more float free of authorship, belonging instead to the road, the tavern, the hearthside, the field. The collection opens with an index of first lines, a map to what follows, but the real entry point is the ear itself. These are poems meant to be spoken aloud, sung to a tune, passed from voice to voice across centuries. Whether you encounter the tender "Barbara Allen" or a anonymous work about a highwayman, the effect is the same: the past breathes close, and speaks in plain words about love, loss, and the stubborn human refusal to stop singing.
